Found this old dresser at a local flea market. It was a little dusty but still in great shape. I had a vision of what I could do with it almost immediately so I grabbed it up and brought it home. I was eager to get to work on it:
First, I went to the top of the dresser and marked the center to make the cut. I pulled all of the drawers out, then used a jigsaw to cut from front to back of the dresser top as well as the framework that held the drawers in place. The jigsaw can help if the frame isn’t exactly centered because you can follow the framework instead of a line. I left the bottom drawer. This gave extra storage underneath the seat.
Once I had the frame cut, we had to add 1x material to the back of the dresser. Definitely weakens the structure if you cut the frame! But the 1x pulls it back together, and even made it stronger than it was previously.
We wanted the sides of the chair to be smooth, so I cut more 1x material in order to give it a cleaner look, plus it added support inside of the chair. So far it is turning out the way I wanted it to.
I added a bottom to the chair itself using the 1x as well, and this not only gave it a seat but it prevented any weight from being put on the drawer underneath the chair. We stained the seat red, but painted the rest of the dresser a Crisp Mint Green color to give it some great contrast.
Once finished I was definitely satisfied with the end results. The vision as well as the project came together the way I wanted it to.
