Many individuals will use a shop vac for their dust collection on individual machines because this is a low cost method of getting the dust away from the tools. Dust collection is more than just keeping the dust away from you and the machines, it helps with cleanup of the shop. Especially if you have a production shop, you will spend so much time sweeping and dealing with sinus problems if you don’t have a collection system.
What many will do is just hook the shop vac directly to the machine and just pick it up that way. Though this can be done in this manner, it will wear the shop vac out quick. Especially if you don’t change the filter or wash it out VERY often will this be the case. So what do you do?
You have to channel the sawdust into a collector of some sort before it gets into the Shop Vac itself. Here is a cheap and easy means of doing so in the video below.
