Various Types of Router Bits: Which Are For You?

routerA router can be an incredibly useful tool, but it can’t do anything without the proper bits. If you’re going to unlock the full potential of this device, you’ll need to buy the right bits.

However, if you’re new to using a router, you may not know which bits you should buy. Here’s a brief overview of the types of router bits available so that you can determine which ones you’d most like to own.

Straight Bits

These bits are one of the first types any router-owner should buy. You’ll get more use out of them than any other type of bit. They’re what you’ll use if you want to make a straight groove in a piece of wood or hollow out an area.

Rabbeting Bits

This bit type can also be extremely useful. It’s typically used to cut a shoulder, also known as a rabbet, into the edge of a piece of wood. Doing this allows you to easily join pieces of wood together.

Edge-Forming Bits

This type of bit is usually more valuable to people who have a lot of experience with routers. It’s used to cut decorative edges, such as a rounded edge. In most cases, it’s used to put the finishing touch on a project. You may want to hold off buying these bits at first until you’ve had some time to get familiar with your router.

Chamfer Bits

If you want to cut a beveled edge, you’re going to need to invest in Chamfer bits. These bits can also be used to cut edges in a way that allows you to properly join constructions that are multi-sided.

Flush-Trim Bits

These bits are used in order to cut the edge of one piece so that it’s flush with the edge of another piece. This is especially useful if you want to create multiple pieces with an identical bit of detailing. In most cases, the bit is guided by a pilot bearing that has the same diameter as the cutter being used.

Rounding-Over Bit

A lot of projects have harsh, sharp edges. You can round out these edges with this type of bit. You can easily adjust it to fit the cutting depth that you need.

Cove Bit

If you want to make the edges of your project less round, you’ll need to get a cove bit. It adds a decorative edge with a straight appearance. It can be a great way to fix edges you’re not happy with.

Roman Ogee Bit

If you’re looking to add some classic and attractive detailing to your pieces, you may want to take a closer look at this bit. Despite its odd name, it’s proven to be tremendously popular. Many people love the designs that it can help them create.

As you can see, there are a lot of types of router bits to choose from. Make sure you get the most out your router and select bits that you’ll be able to enjoy using.
