good sized sawIt goes without saying that a tablesaw is one of the most important pieces of equipment that you will ever add to your collection of woodworking tools. Shopping for a tablesaw is something that should take a bit of time and consideration on your part.

Any smart wood-worker or carpenter will want to ask themselves what size tablesaw do I need and what are my options. After all, this is a great investment that is going to give you hours upon hours of enjoyment as you work on many of your woodworking creations or carpentry projects.

The Different Types Of Tablesaws

You will see that the majority of tablesaws will fit into one of these categories:

Contractor tablesaws – These models are meant to be lightweight enough that they can be easily moved from one job to another. Many of these models will have an open style base and they will weigh roughly 250 to 350 lbs. You might also be able to find some of these tablesaws will fit right in with your budget if you are a hobbyist.

These contractor style tablesaws are good for carpentry tasks, furniture making and more. Just be sure that you are using the right blades for the cuts that you are looking to make and this can be an incredible tablesaw to add to your woodworking tool collection.

Cabinet Tablesaws – This type of saw gets its name from their enclosed style, cabinet platform. For the most part, they are used to suit the needs of an experienced carpenter or woodworker that has to have durable gear to work with.

When wondering what size tablesaw do I need for a project, you will find that a cabinet version is going to be very robust in structure, much more so than a contractor saw. They are loaded up with a heftier motor and they are just right for cutting through thicker hard woods.

Portable tablesaws – These are saws that are developed to be transported easily from one location to another. This is a great benefit for any craftsman who needs to move from one site to another, yet they are able to take on a lot of the functions that the heavier tablesaws do. You will usually find that this is a model that will be powered by a compact universal motor, which may make them a bit noisier and possess a bit less power than other models.

Hybrid tablesaws – There are a lot of businesses today that are looking for hybrid tablesaws that will have a smaller base and legs that are enclosed, keeping the motor on the inside. These hybrids will come with powerful arbor bearings and trunnions and give a strong gearing and belt system when compared to the contractor models.

The bottom line is, when you are picking out the right size tablesaw, you will want to think about your budget and of course the time that you are going to be spending on your woodworking projects. When you take all of these different things into consideration, you will be able to pick out the perfect saw to meet your needs.
