Use Your Table Saw For Decorative Work

Sometimes you can have two projects that are built EXACTLY the same, same materials, size, and pattern. But one design or enhancement makes all the difference in the world when added to one of the finished products. It could be the particular woodstock of one, even though it is the same as its twin, has a beautiful grain pattern that is brought out when stained. Or the one has more/less knots than the other. It could be anything.

There are other methods of enriching the project to make it more appealing such as adding various trim work, including designer trim. Sometimes one piece of this stock can cost as much as a sheet of plywood or more, so it just depends on what you can afford. If you don’t want to pay so much for it, ask at the lumberyard or wherever you are getting the molding if they have pieces that have been miss cut, or have damage to them. You can get them for half the price or even less with some finagling. Especially if you purchase a few pieces.

But there are other things that you can do to enhance the overall design. Various stains will raise the grain of the wood. Of course, the obvious, some stains and finishing products look better with a clearcoat such as a urethane (polyurethane inside – sparurethane outside), varnish, or different types of finishing oils. There are many ideas that you can rummage up, just test it on a large enough scrap piece first when it comes to the finish, or set the trim, molding, or whatever else you may do against the project or piece so you can at least get a visual.

Or you can instead, use your table saw to make designs and patterns in the wood. How is this done? Just check out the video at the bottom of the page and you will see Izzy Swan show you how you can create beauty in the stock you are using with your table saw. Enjoy!
